Why was the LAW given?
Galatians 3:19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.
Many people want to keep 'The Law' but have no understanding or knowledge of what 'The Law' is.
Before we proceed we would like to clear up one dangerous misunderstanding of the word 'Turah', the 'Turah' is NOT the first five books of the Old Testament only it is the whole Word of God from Genesis to Revelation for a more in-depth understanding please see our article: What Do We Mean by the Term "Turah?"
Let’s have a look at why the Law was given.
Deuteronomy 31:25 -26, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying: 26 “Take this Book of the Law, and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there as a witness against you;
The book of the law was put next to or beside the ark of the covenant, it was to remain as a witness against Israel because they broke/transgressed Yahuah's (The LORD) covenant which is the 10 words please see: Deuteronomy 4:13; Jeremiah 31:31-37; Hebrews 10:16-17.
Notice that there is a clear separation or distinction between "The Book of the Law" and "The Covenant" One is written by God with His own finger on two tablets of stone see Exodus 31:18; Deuteronomy 4:13 and the other being written by Moses on scrolls see Deuteronomy 31:24.
The Original covenant made at Mt Sinai with the twelve tribes of Israel was the 10 Commandments which is better rendered 10 Words please read Deuteronomy 5:1-22.
Verse 22 “These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly, in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and He added no more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
Yahuah (the LORD) only gave the ten words to Israel (All 12 Tribes), Moses tells us clearly that He (Yahuah/the LORD) added NO MORE.
So if Yahuah (the LORD) added NO MORE who are we to say he did?
Galatians 3:17-18, 17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
The law (or book of the law) came 430 years after Abraham so if one says Abraham kept the law they have some misunderstanding to sought out quickly, these verses above make a clear distinction between the 'law' and the 'covenant' Not only did Yahuah (The LORD) make a distinction between the two in Deuteronomy 31:25-26 but Paul also makes a distinction between the two in Galatians 3:19 what Abraham obeyed was Yahuah's (The LORD) Covenant NOT the Law of Moses which came 430 years after Abraham.
Galatians 3:19 What purpose then does the law (Book of the Law Deuteronomy 31:25) serve? It was added because of transgressions, (Because Israel broke Yahuah's Covenant) till the Seed (Yahusha Ha Mashyach/Jesus Christ) should come to whom the promise was made (Given to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3); and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.
The law was given 430 years after Abraham because they transgressed and broke Yahuah's Covenant which is the 10 words spoken by Yahuah (the LORD) himself and written by the finger of Yahuah (the LORD) on two tablets of stone. See: Deuteronomy 4:13
Ezekiel 20:25 “Therefore I (Yahuah/the LORD) also gave them up to statutes that were not good, and judgments by which they could not live (Book of the law Deuteronomy 31:25);
These statutes (written in the book of the law see Deuteronomy 31:25) were not good and that they could not live by them this is what was written in the book of the law as a witness against Israel see Deuteronomy 31:25.
Colossians 2:13-14, 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses (The breaking of the Covenant at Mt Sinai), 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us (Book of the Law Deuteronomy 31:25 & Ezekiel 20:25), which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
This certificate of debt consisting of decrees against Israel (Book of the Law), which was hostile to us (statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live); is exactly what we find in Deuteronomy 31:25-26 and Ezekiel 20:25.
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under Law(Book of the Law Deuteronomy 31:25 & Ezekiel 20:25), but under grace.
Galatians 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law (Book of the Law Deuteronomy 31:25 & Ezekiel 20:25).
Where many get confused is there misunderstanding of thinking the 'LAW' and 'TURAH' are one in the same, well they are NOT one and the same they are very different. for more understanding about the word Turah please see: What Do We Mean by the Term "Turah?"
Please be like the Bareans in Acts 17:11 where they were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
Don't reject something without searching the matter out, Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter and it is the glory of a king to search out a matter.
Here are some verses throughout the scriptures that refer to "The Law of Moses":
Joshua 8:31-32; 22:5; 23:6; 1 Kings 2:3; 2 Kings 14:6; 2 Kings 21:8; 2 Kings 23:25; 2 Chronicles 23:18; 25:4; 30:16; 33:8; 34:14; Ezra 3:2; 7:6; Nehemiah 8:1; 8:14; 9:14; 10:29; Daniel 9:11; 9:13' Malachi 4:4; Luke 2:22; 24:44; John 1:45; 7:19; 7:23; Acts 13:39; Acts 15:5; 28:23; Romans 10:5; 1 Corinthians 9:9; Hebrews 10:28.
Remember there is a reason that its called "The Law of Moses" because the Law was given by Moses and NOT by Yahuah (the LORD) because he himself told us in Deuteronomy 5:22 that he gave the ten words and ADDED NO MORE!
Now the Turah of Yahuah (the 10 Words) are on the minds and hearts of the believers that have been born again.
The New Covenant is the Ten (10) Words that are now written on our hearts and minds by the Holy Spirit when we are born again of the Water and of the Spirit. John 3:1-8; Acts 2:38-39; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8:8-12.
